The Vancouver Canucks will embark on a new chapter as they face the New Jersey Devils on Sunday afternoon in Newark, marking their first game since the significant trade of team captain Quinn Hughes. The Canucks traded Hughes, a former Norris Trophy recipient, to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and an unprotected first-round pick in 2026.

Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin acknowledged the difficulty of the trade, expressing gratitude for Hughes’ contributions to the franchise and emphasizing the excitement surrounding the new players joining the team. Rossi, a promising second-line center, recorded impressive stats last season with 24 goals and 36 assists for a total of 60 points. Despite facing injuries this season, he has managed to contribute 13 points in 17 games.

Buium, who was the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, has made a solid impact in his first full NHL season, tallying 14 points in 31 games. Similarly, Ohgren, chosen 19th overall in the 2022 draft, showed promise during his time in the AHL, although he has struggled to find the net at the NHL level this season.

Currently, the Canucks are struggling, having dropped to the bottom of the league following their ninth loss in 11 games. They recently faced a tight 3-2 defeat against the Buffalo Sabres, despite outshooting their opponents 32 to 15. Forward Kiefer Sherwood remains optimistic, focusing on the team’s process and identity, believing their hard work will eventually pay off.

On the other hand, the Devils are looking to build momentum after a decisive 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks, marking their second win in three games after a tough five-game losing streak. Despite a growing injury list that includes forward Arseny Gritsyuk and defenseman Simon Nemec, coach Sheldon Keefe highlighted the importance of teamwork, structure, and effort, which he believes are essential for continued success.

As both teams prepare for this matchup, the Canucks aim to reverse their fortunes while the Devils look to solidify their newfound form, setting the stage for an exciting game.
