NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Brian Cushing, a standout linebacker and first-round draft pick in 2009, vividly remembers his early days in the NFL when he worked closely with Robert Saleh, who was then an assistant coach for the Houston Texans. Their collaboration not only bolstered Cushing’s performance but also showcased the mentoring influence Saleh has had on players throughout his career—a quality that Titans’ general manager Mike Borgonzi hopes will translate effectively in Tennessee.

Cushing reflects on how Saleh’s approach to coaching laid the foundation for his success. He emphasized Saleh’s commitment to thorough preparation, saying, “It was learning to watch film and how it changes every single week and giving me hypothetical situations in a certain play.” Cushing recalled the many scenarios Saleh presented to him, which allowed him to feel well-prepared heading into games. The outcomes speak for themselves: as a rookie, Cushing recorded four interceptions and ten passes defensed, earning him the Defensive Rookie of the Year honors with 78 percent of the votes, along with a Pro Bowl selection.

This focus on preparation and attention to detail did not go unnoticed by other players who have crossed paths with Saleh. DeMeco Ryans, another linebacker from that Texans era and now a coaching counterpart in the AFC South, experienced success with his Houston team, which ranked at the top of several defensive categories during his tenure.

Saleh’s ability to connect with players extended beyond his time with the Texans. After his stint in Houston and a successful period in Seattle, he took on a linebackers role in Jacksonville under Gus Bradley. There, he reinforced the importance of mutual respect and leadership in the locker room. “They want to be treated like men, and they want to be treated with respect,” Saleh stated in 2014. “They want you to teach them something and help them perform on Sundays and help them maximize their abilities as individuals.” These values have been consistent throughout Saleh’s career, gaining him respect from players like Paul Posluszny, who noted that he played some of his best football under Saleh’s guidance.

As Saleh assembles his coaching staff in Tennessee, the optimism surrounding his leadership is palpable. Former teammates like Cushing have confidence in Saleh’s knowledge and coaching style, which many believe will bring a positive impact to the Titans. “That confidence comes from years of experience,” Cushing said, recognizing that Saleh’s expertise could play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s success in the years to come.
