President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has drawn attention to the pressing issues of poverty and hardship affecting numerous individuals across Fiji. In his address to Parliament during the opening of the new session, the President presented alarming statistics indicating that a significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line. Moreover, an additional 25 percent face hardships just above this threshold, impacting both urban and rural areas.
These findings highlight the urgent need for government policies and programs that are inclusive, well-targeted, and supported by credible evidence. President Lalabalavu underscored that the Government’s agenda for 2026 and beyond aims not only to foster economic growth but to ensure that such growth translates into real benefits for everyday citizens.
He stated, “Economic growth must lead to decent work, safeguard the vulnerable, and invest in our people’s capabilities,” emphasizing the necessity of a well-rounded approach to development that benefits all.
In his address, the President outlined three guiding principles for shaping future government programs and policies. The first principle is unity in diversity, which aims to ensure that all citizens, regardless of background or location, can participate in national progress. The second principle emphasizes sustainability and resilience, focusing on protecting individuals, the economy, and the environment for current and future generations. Finally, integrity and good governance form the third principle, aimed at strengthening public trust in institutions and leadership.
These principles are set to play a vital role in guiding legislation, budgetary decisions, institutional reforms, and public policies across multiple sectors. President Lalabalavu expressed hope that by adhering to these principles, Fiji can address inequality, alleviate hardship, and promote a more inclusive and resilient society in the years ahead.
The optimism expressed by President Lalabalavu for a more equitable future reflects a proactive stance in tackling the challenges faced by many Fijians. This approach may inspire confidence among citizens and stakeholders, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous nation.
