Dominic Calvert-Lewin delivered a stellar performance, scoring twice as Leeds United trounced Crystal Palace 4-1 at Elland Road, significantly boosting their position in the Premier League and moving six points clear of the relegation zone.

Calvert-Lewin’s goals marked a strong first half for the Whites, giving them a 2-0 lead at halftime. Captain Ethan Ampadu’s first league goal for Leeds in the second half effectively sealed the victory for Daniel Farke’s team, further enhancing their survival hopes this season. Although Palace managed to convert a stoppage-time penalty through substitute Justin Devenny, it was too late to alter the outcome. Anton Stach capped off the impressive display with a well-taken free kick, marking the end of the scoring.

The summer signing, Calvert-Lewin, has now scored in five consecutive Premier League matches, a feat he last achieved in October 2020, and this double marked his first in the top flight since November 2020. He has accumulated a total of six goals in his last five league matches and seven for the season, contributing to Leeds’ remarkable run of four games without defeat.

In terms of lineup changes, Palace coach Oliver Glasner opted for a complete rotation just 48 hours after their 2-2 draw against KuPS in the UEFA Conference League. Leeds made just one adjustment, bringing in Brenden Aaronson for Ao Tanaka.

The match had its tense moments early on when both Calvert-Lewin and Palace defender Marc Guéhi were involved in a clash of heads but were able to continue playing. Leeds was quick to assert dominance, with Joe Rodon’s attempt being deflected wide, and former Leeds player Eddie Nketiah failing to convert for Palace when he shot straight at Guido Perri.

The breakthrough came for Leeds when Ampadu’s long throw-in found Calvert-Lewin, who capitalized on a rebound to score. Just before halftime, Calvert-Lewin struck again with a header from a flick-on by Jaka Bijol, bringing his tally to six league goals in just five games.

Leeds continued to apply pressure in the second half and increased their lead in the 60th minute, with Ampadu reacting quickest to a corner that was poorly cleared by Palace. Despite some late attempts from Palace, including a penalty awarded in stoppage time, Leeds maintained control to secure the comprehensive victory.

As the match concluded, Leeds United can take great encouragement from their current form as they strive to secure their place in the Premier League, with Calvert-Lewin emerging as a vital part of their attack and demonstrating the potential for more successes ahead.
