Seedlings from California have arrived in Fiji, marking a pivotal moment in The Wonderful Company’s (TWC) ambitious plan to establish one of the largest commercial fruit orchards in the nation. The seeds, which landed in Waiqele, Vanua Levu, this month, represent a significant step forward in the company’s agricultural initiatives for the island.
In a recent statement, TWC announced that this pilot project will focus on cultivating Persian limes, Mexican limes, lemons, and papayas, signaling the start of a long-term investment in Fiji’s agricultural sector. Earlier this year, it was revealed that TWC secured lease agreements for 80 acres of land in Vanua Levu to facilitate this commercial agriculture venture.
Agricultural experts from TWC explored various regions in Fiji last year, concluding that Vanua Levu has the ideal climate and soil conditions for growing high-quality citrus fruits, mangoes, and papayas. After two years of extensive planning, the project has begun to take shape, with more than 7,000 seedlings shipped from California to be cultivated in a newly established greenhouse facility in Waiqele.
As part of the setup, over 3,500 seedlings have already been delivered, with the remaining shipment expected by the end of December. A greenhouse engineer from China is assisting in the construction of modern facilities aimed at ensuring the seedlings thrive during their formative stages.
To oversee daily operations, TWC has appointed a local farm manager from Vanua Levu, who will collaborate with the National Agriculture Pte Ltd (NAPL) team. This manager’s role will be crucial in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and fostering connections with local communities and government entities.
TWC’s extensive expertise in global agriculture, particularly with citrus, almonds, pistachios, and pomegranates, will play a key role in building partnerships with local farmers and stimulating economic growth in Vanua Levu. This year, the company has also facilitated beekeeping workshops for local beekeepers in Nadi and Labasa, emphasizing knowledge sharing in areas such as bee biology and hive management.
Ongoing training and hands-on demonstrations will further equip local farmers with essential skills and techniques, aligning with the Fiji Government’s objective to bolster the agriculture sector. The long-term vision of this initiative extends beyond immediate benefits, aiming to decrease Fiji’s dependence on imported fruit, reduce trade deficits, and enhance local food security.
For the people of Vanua Levu, this project promises not only a short-term economic boost but also a sustainable pathway for future development. TWC expects the initiative to open market opportunities for local farmers, provide employment for community members, and ultimately increase access to fresh, locally produced fruits across Fiji.
The Wonderful Company, with an impressive $6 billion portfolio and a commitment to global health and happiness, continues to strive for impactful agricultural projects that benefit both local economies and consumers alike.
