STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Michael Caliendo, a standout wrestler from the University of Iowa, has advanced to the finals of the 165-pound weight class at the 2026 Big Ten Championships held at the Bryce Jordan Center. This marks Caliendo’s second consecutive appearance in the finals, solidifying his reputation as a formidable competitor after he decisively defeated No. 7 seed Andrew Barbosa from Rutgers with a score of 11-3.
As the Hawkeyes completed Day 1 of the championship, they currently find themselves in fourth place with a total of 70 points. With other competitors still in contention, Iowa has six wrestlers competing on the backside and three engaged in extra brackets, showing promise for further progress.
Coach Tom Brands commented on the team’s status, emphasizing the importance of preparing for their final two weeks leading up to the NCAA tournament. “Caliendo in the finals, have a lot of work to do there. Lot on the backside with a lot of work to do there. Position yourself the best for the tournament that is in two weeks,” he stated.
Several other Iowa wrestlers are set to compete in the consolation semifinals tomorrow morning, including Dean Peterson (125), Drake Ayala (133), Nasir Bailey (141), Patrick Kennedy (174), and Ben Kueter (285). Additionally, Gabe Arnold is still alive in the 197-pound 11th-place bracket, while Ryder Block and Victor Voinovich III are competing in the 149- and 157-pound ninth-place brackets, respectively.
The team standings after Day 1 reflect the competitive nature of the event, with Penn State leading the pack with 146.5 points, followed by Ohio State and Nebraska. Iowa’s placement puts them in a strong position heading into the finals and consolation matches on Sunday.
As the finals approach, Caliendo is set to face off against the top seed, Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State. With the excitement building, the Iowa wrestling team remains determined to capitalize on their opportunities and push through the championships, showcasing their resilience and skill on the mat.
