After years of determination and strategic planning, Cadillac has finally made its debut in Formula 1, marking a significant milestone in Michael Andretti’s vision that began back in 2021. The journey to this moment was not easy, as it involved overcoming initial rejections, a change in management, and ultimately, a fast-tracked process to establish a fully operational team from the ground up. The event signifies not just an entry but a proud beginning for the organization.
“The Cadillac Formula 1 Team lining up for its first Grand Prix is a proud moment for all of us,” said TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss. He noted the competitive nature of Formula 1, emphasizing that success will be hard-earned. “This weekend is just the beginning.”
Cadillac’s entry is notable as it is the first start-up operation in Formula 1 since Haas joined the grid in 2016, bringing experienced drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez back to the championship, which now features a grid of 22 cars.
Looking ahead, Cadillac and its parent company GM have ambitious plans to establish a strong competitive presence in Formula 1. However, their immediate expectations are modest. As a new team, they are prepared to start at the back of the grid, with the primary goal of completing the race and accumulating valuable mileage this weekend.
The team has made strides with its Ferrari-powered MAC-26 chassis, named in honor of racing legend Mario Andretti, which has shown promise during pre-season tests in Barcelona and Bahrain. According to Team Principal Graeme Lowdon, the team has achieved significant progress and has already planned initial upgrades for their car for this debut weekend. “Our focus is on building long-term success,” Lowdon expressed, highlighting the hard work put in by everyone involved in this endeavor.
Veterans Bottas and Perez are beginning a new chapter with Cadillac, bringing their experience and commitment to the team. Bottas remarked on the uniqueness of starting anew with a fresh team, acknowledging the challenges ahead while celebrating the team’s readiness for their inaugural race. “Progress is the number one thing; we need to get better from the start to the end of the year,” he stated.
Fellow driver Perez echoed Bottas’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and development within the team.
In addition to the spotlight on the new team, this weekend also marks the Formula 1 debut of Colton Herta, a well-regarded driver from IndyCar, who is testing his skills in Formula 2 while stepping into the role of test and development driver for Cadillac. Competing for Hitech TGR, Herta aims to establish his credentials for a future seat in Formula 1, enhancing the excitement and anticipation surrounding Cadillac’s inaugural event.
As Cadillac embarks on this journey, the determination and optimism within the team point towards a hopeful future in the competitive world of Formula 1 racing.
