PROVO, Utah – BYU’s AJ Dybantsa has received the prestigious USBWA Oscar Robertson High-Major Player of the Month award for December, recognizing his outstanding performance on the court. The 6-foot-9 forward has had a remarkable month, averaging 27.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 2.3 steals per game while leading the Cougars to an unblemished 6-0 record during December. His shooting percentage has been impressive as well, with a 65.9 percent success rate from the field, 29.4 percent from three-point range, and 78.0 percent from the free-throw line—contributing to BYU outscoring opponents by an average of 27.1 points per game.
Dybantsa’s standout performances include a significant 22-point showing against Cal Baptist at the Delta Center and a career-high 28 points—including 22 points in the second half—during a thrilling comeback victory over Clemson in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. His impressive second-half effort included five assists and seven rebounds, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure when the Cougars were down by 22 points.
In an incredible showcase of his skills, Dybantsa scored a career-high 35 points against Abilene Christian, setting a program record for the most points by a freshman in a single game. He recorded a remarkable shooting performance, making 9-of-12 field goal attempts and hitting 17-of-20 from the free-throw line, making him the first freshman in BYU history to achieve such numbers.
The Brockton, Massachusetts native further solidified his position in the history books by completing BYU’s first-ever 30/10/10 triple-double with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a dominant 109-81 victory over Eastern Washington. This performance included an efficient shooting night, where he shot 11-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
In addition to his accolades, Dybantsa made history during a game on December 23, setting the Big 12 record for the most points in a triple-double and becoming the first player in the conference to achieve consecutive 30-point games with at least 75% shooting.
As the Cougars prepare to start Big 12 play on Saturday, January 3, against Kansas State, Dybantsa’s stellar performances have provided a hopeful outlook for the team’s upcoming challenges.
