Bulls hopeful on Giddey’s ankle as Pistons game looms

Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey did not participate in Monday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs due to a sprained right ankle he sustained while defending against Cleveland Cavaliers forward De’Andre Hunter during the third quarter of Saturday’s game. In that match-up, which ended in a 128-122 defeat for the Bulls, Giddey’s injury became a highlight on social media as he stumbled after being crossed over by Hunter, who finished with a powerful drive for a dunk.

Bulls coach Billy Donovan provided an update on Giddey’s condition, expressing optimism about the injury’s severity. “They don’t feel like it’s too severe,” Donovan remarked, noting that there was minimal swelling after the game. Giddey reported some discomfort during Monday’s shootaround, but the team’s expectations for his recovery remain positive.

The 6-foot-8 Giddey has made a strong impression in his second season with the Bulls, boasting impressive averages of 21.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 9.3 assists over the first nine games. In the recent game against the Cavaliers, he contributed 15 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, showcasing his skill set and versatility.

Despite facing past criticisms regarding his defensive abilities, Donovan praised Giddey’s improvements. “I do think he’s made some really positive strides there,” he said, acknowledging the need for team support in defensive situations but emphasizing Giddey’s enhanced capability to contain the basketball.

Looking ahead, the Bulls are set to embark on a four-game road trip, starting with a game against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. Giddey could potentially make a return in that matchup, as Donovan noted his encouraging recovery trajectory. Additionally, guard Coby White, who has been sidelined this season due to a strained right calf, could also rejoin the team during this trip after participating in scrimmages with the Bulls’ G League affiliate.

With the team navigating injuries but showing resilience, there’s a sense of hope as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the coming games.
