Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff delivered some concerning news regarding goaltender Alex Lyon during a media session on Wednesday. Lyon has returned to Buffalo for further evaluation following a lower-body injury sustained in the latter part of Monday night’s game against the St. Louis Blues. Despite finishing the match, where he made 16 saves in a 4-2 victory, Lyon’s condition appears to be serious, and Ruff indicated that his absence may extend longer than initially hoped.

In light of Lyon’s injury, the Sabres have activated goaltender Colten Ellis from injured reserve. Ellis is expected to be the backup for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen when the team faces off against the Dallas Stars on New Year’s Eve. Ruff emphasized the need for medical assessment, stating, “We know it’s going to be a bit of time.”

Lyon has been instrumental in the Sabres’ recent success, contributing to a nine-game winning streak and winning seven consecutive starts. His standout performances included a notable effort against the New York Islanders, where he recorded 32 saves. Over the course of 21 games this season, Lyon has compiled a record of 10-6-3, with a goals-against average of 2.82 and a save percentage of .906, along with one shutout. His exceptional play has significantly helped elevate the Sabres from the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and brought them closer to a Wild Card playoff position.

Meanwhile, Colten Ellis returns to the lineup after being sidelined with a concussion since December 9. Acquired from the St. Louis Blues, Ellis has played in eight NHL games, earning a 4-3-0 record with a 3.25 GAA and .895 SV%.

Currently, the Sabres hold a record of 20-14-4, placing them fifth in the Atlantic Division and just one point shy of a Wild Card spot, which keeps their playoff hopes alive as they head into the New Year. The team’s resilience and ability to adapt amid injuries will be crucial as they continue to strive for a postseason berth.
