The Milwaukee Bucks faced significant speculation that they would part ways with ten-time All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of the NBA trade deadline last week. Ultimately, he remains a key member of the team as he continues his recovery from a calf injury that has sidelined him for the last few weeks.
Instead of trading their star player, the Bucks made moves by sending Amir Coffey and Cole Anthony to the Phoenix Suns. In a strategic deal that included the Chicago Bulls, the Bucks were able to acquire NBA Champion Ousmane Dieng. Shortly after, they claimed guard Cam Thomas off waivers from the Brooklyn Nets.
Both newcomers made their debuts in a recent game against the Orlando Magic, although their playing time was limited. Bucks general manager Jon Horst expressed optimism regarding their potential contributions to the team moving forward.
Despite a disappointing season with a record of 21-30, the Bucks’ trade deadline acquisitions demonstrate their commitment to competing. In a Bucks radio show, Horst emphasized his excitement for Dieng and Thomas. He described Dieng, a former number 11 overall pick and a 22-year-old forward, as having significant potential due to his size, skill, and versatility. Dieng is currently shooting a career-high 36% from three-point range, which could be valuable for the team.
Regarding Cam Thomas, Horst highlighted his “real future upside” and noted that he possesses a skill set that can have an immediate impact. The Bucks have had their eye on Thomas for some time, and Horst’s comments suggest they are interested in retaining him beyond this season. With the potential for salary cap space in the offseason, they could extend a multi-year offer to him. While at Brooklyn, Thomas averaged 15.6 points per game, with impressive shooting numbers. His return to form in Milwaukee could complement Giannis effectively, giving the Bucks an additional scoring option.
The Bucks are hopeful that these new additions will uplift their performance and create a more competitive environment as the season progresses.
