Browns Open 21-Day Window for Deshaun Watson as Comeback Hopes Rise

The Cleveland Browns have officially opened quarterback Deshaun Watson’s 21-day practice window, following weeks of speculation regarding his return from the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed the update during a press conference on Wednesday, revealing that Watson is set to practice for the first time since undergoing two surgeries on his Achilles tendon after injuring it during a loss to Cincinnati in Week 7 of the previous season.

“It’s outstanding for Deshaun. He’s been working so hard rehabbing,” Stefanski expressed, emphasizing the importance of Watson’s rehabilitation journey. He mentioned that the immediate focus is on Watson participating in individual drills and gradually working towards scout team reps. The Browns are cautious about setting expectations, with Stefanski clarifying that neither the team nor Watson is currently prioritizing a return to game play this season.

Watson’s time with the Browns has been marred by a series of challenges, including suspensions and injuries. Since joining the team in 2022, he has played in 19 games, with a team record of 9-10 during his appearances. Watson’s performance last season was particularly disappointing, highlighted by a completion rate of 63.4%, accumulating 1,148 passing yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions, leading to a 1-6 record in his starts.

As Watson resumes practice, the Browns are preparing to start Shedeur Sanders at quarterback for their upcoming game against the Titans. Stefanski indicated that the team’s approach to evaluating the starting position is on a week-to-week basis, reflecting the ongoing adjustments the team faces.

The Browns now have 21 days to activate Watson to the 53-man roster. If they do not bring him back within this timeline, he will miss the remainder of the season. This situation adds a layer of uncertainty for not only Watson but also for the team’s future as they strive to improve their standing on the field. The Cleveland fanbase remains hopeful for a strong comeback from Watson, who has demonstrated resilience and commitment throughout his recovery process.
