CLEVELAND, Ohio – The search for a new head coach for the Cleveland Browns has narrowed as defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has decided to withdraw from consideration for the position. The decision, made on Wednesday night, came after Minter determined that he has a stronger opportunity with other teams, including the Raiders and Ravens, who are also considering him for head coaching roles.

This development follows former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel retracting his name from the Browns’ list, opting instead to take the offensive coordinator position with the Chargers. As a result, the Browns now have four finalists for their head coaching vacancy: current defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, and Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.

In alignment with the Rooney Rule, Cleveland is also required to interview one more diverse candidate aside from Scheelhaase. Minter’s exit opens the door for Udinski to interview on Friday, while Scheelhaase will be available only after participating in the NFC Championship Game against the Seahawks on Sunday.

Reports indicate that Schwartz and Monken, both aged 59, remain strong contenders for the role after completing their second interviews earlier this week. The Browns have expressed a desire for Schwartz to stay on as defensive coordinator, regardless of whether he is promoted, but understand that he may wish to form his own coaching team.

Schwartz stands out as the only defensive candidate with head coaching experience, having led the Lions from 2009 to 2013 with a record of 29-51 and a postseason appearance. He has since been a key figure in developing one of the top defenses in the NFL in Cleveland, contributing to the success of players like Myles Garrett and rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger, who is a strong contender for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Monken previously served as the Browns’ offensive coordinator in 2019 and boasts over a decade of NFL coaching experience, adding a rich background in coaching overall.

As the Browns proceed with their search, all eyes will be on the upcoming interviews and the team’s next steps in solidifying their leadership for the upcoming season.
