Brighton High School’s football team has successfully advanced to the Class A high school football semifinals for the second consecutive year, demonstrating their prowess on the field with a convincing 42-14 victory over Buffalo McKinley in a state tournament quarterfinal held on November 21 at All High Stadium in Buffalo.
The Bruins’ running attack shone brightly, particularly led by junior Zack Rossignol, who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Rossignol racked up an impressive 186 rushing yards on 18 carries, including two touchdowns. His standout moment came early in the game when he executed a phenomenal 46-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage, setting the tone for Brighton’s dominant performance.
Brighton’s offensive lineup was bolstered by senior running back Justin Medina, who also made a significant contribution with two rushing touchdowns and 51 yards on 14 carries. The team’s quarterback, sophomore Ethan Bialaszewski, played a pivotal role as well, throwing for two touchdown passes—one to Leo Hopkins for 22 yards and another to Patrick Rohr for 52 yards, both executed beautifully with deceptive fake handoffs. Bialaszewski completed 4 of 7 passes for a total of 118 yards.
On the defensive side, Brighton was equally formidable. Patrick Rohr picked off a pass, marking his fourth interception of the season, while junior defensive back Anthony Julian also added an interception. The Bruins’ defense was relentless, highlighted by a strong performance from junior lineman Zahmar Tookes, who forced a fumble and recorded two sacks among seven tackles. Linebacker Amari Snowden also made an impact with seven tackles, ensuring Buffalo McKinley’s scoring opportunities were limited.
The game unfolded with Brighton establishing an early lead, scoring three touchdowns by halftime. Despite a late push from Buffalo McKinley, including a touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Bruins maintained control throughout the game and celebrated their victory with confidence and momentum as they look ahead to the semifinals.
Brighton’s effective blend of strong running, strategic passing, and resilient defense not only paved the way for this win but also sets a hopeful trajectory for their continued success in the tournament. With each game, the Bruins are cementing their reputation as a powerful contender in high school football.
