Brightburn Filmed in Georgia: Inside Atlanta’s Superpowered Set

In the science fiction horror film “Brightburn,” directed by David Yarovesky, we meet Tori and Kyle Breyer who yearn for a child of their own after facing struggles with conception. Their dreams materialize when they discover a mysterious baby boy from a spaceship, whom they adopt and name Brandon Breyer. As he grows into a talented young boy, Brandon uncovers his extraordinary superpowers, which take a dark turn as he approaches puberty. At the age of 12, instead of using his abilities for good, Brandon succumbs to sinister impulses that threaten those around him, including his adoptive parents.

The film stars a notable cast, including Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner, and it sets its thrilling narrative in Kansas. However, the actual filming took place entirely in Georgia, specifically in the Metro Atlanta area. Principal photography began in March 2018 and wrapped up in May of the same year. Dunn, who plays Brandon, shared insights about his collaborative experience with seasoned actors Banks and Denman, highlighting how their talent and approach to acting positively influenced his own performance.

Metro Atlanta provided the backdrop for many pivotal scenes in “Brightburn.” The now-closed Patrick Henry High School in Stockbridge served as the location for Brandon’s middle school, while the Breyer farmhouse scenes were filmed at the historic Goodwyn-Bailey House in Newnan. Another significant filming site was Darbo’s Family Grill, located in Jonesboro. Dunn recounted an exhilarating moment during filming involving a dramatic truck drop, showcasing the film’s ambitious special effects.

Director David Yarovesky revealed interesting behind-the-scenes details about the practical effects used in the film, particularly in creating a harrowing eye scene. Yarovesky explained the careful planning and creativity involved in combining practical effects with digital elements to achieve a realistic and horrifying visual impact.

Metro Atlanta has long been a hub for film and television production, having hosted an array of notable projects, including “The Walking Dead,” “Stranger Things,” and “Doctor Sleep.” The success of “Brightburn” further adds to Atlanta’s reputation as a favored location for filmmakers seeking diverse and visually captivating environments.

This thrilling horror narrative not only captivates audiences with its suspenseful storyline but also demonstrates the creativity and dedication of its cast and crew, promising a unique viewing experience.
