In anticipation of the upcoming GameAbove Sports Bowl, first-year Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall and third-year Northwestern head coach David Braun shared their reflections on the importance of bowl games amid a growing trend of teams opting out. The game is scheduled to take place at Ford Field in Detroit on December 26, with Central Michigan (7-5) going against Northwestern (6-6) for the second time in history, following a Northwestern victory in 2010.

Braun emphasized the significance of bowl appearances, particularly for Northwestern, stating, “This is an opportunity that we take really serious… Playing in a bowl game is a big deal.” Drinkall echoed this sentiment, noting the challenges of achieving a bowl berth in college football. He highlighted the added value of having one more opportunity to spend time with his players, especially with seniors who remained committed after his hiring last year. Among those players is junior quarterback Angel Flores, who is expected to return from injury for the game.

Both teams are looking forward to showcasing their talents, particularly in a market that holds recruiting importance. Central Michigan aims to break a nine-game losing streak against Big Ten programs, while Northwestern seeks to extend its impressive streak of five consecutive bowl wins.

The growth of the College Football Playoff has led to shifts within the bowl system, yet both coaches are steadfast in their belief that bowl games still hold critical significance for players and programs. Braun stated, “We’ve gotta figure it out… because it matters.”

As both teams prepare for the postseason matchup, the GameAbove Sports Bowl presents a valuable opportunity for meaningful competition and player development. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
