This winter has been particularly challenging, with many areas in the region grappling with significant snowfall. After the weekend brought more than a foot of snow to some locations, the forecast indicates that additional snowfall is expected.

Meteorologist Kyle Pederson from the National Weather Service informed local media that Boston can anticipate an additional 2 to 3 inches of snow from an incoming clipper system, while northern and northeast Massachusetts may see even higher totals, potentially reaching around 4 inches. The snow is predicted to start during the Tuesday evening commute, around 5 to 7 p.m., but should clear up in time for the Wednesday morning commute.

The South Shore and Cape areas are expected to receive the least amount of snow, with predictions indicating less than an inch. There is also a possibility that snow might transition to rain along the southern coast.

This new system will contribute to Boston’s already impressive total of nearly 40 inches of snowfall this winter, which stands in stark contrast to last winter when only 18 inches had been recorded by this time. Boston’s average snowfall for this period typically hovers around 27.7 inches.

However, there is a silver lining in sight as a warmup is expected later this week, easing some of the burdens brought on by the recent arctic blast. Temperatures are forecasted to rise to the mid to upper 30s, which Pederson notes will aid in melting some of the snow, although nighttime lows will still dip into the teens and low 20s, with some interior areas experiencing single-digit temperatures. Thankfully, wind chills are expected to be less harsh than before.

As the season progresses, the combination of warmer temperatures and changing weather patterns may bring some relief from the heavy snowfall, offering residents a chance to gather their bearings and enjoy the winter landscape.
