Boston College has decided to keep head coach Bill O’Brien on despite a challenging season that concluded with a disappointing 2-10 record. This decision comes after a season marked by a significant 10-game losing streak, which was only broken by a strong 34-12 victory over Syracuse in the final game.
Athletics director Blake James addressed the community’s concerns in a letter, expressing shared disappointment among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and fans. However, he emphasized O’Brien’s potential, stating, “Like many, I believe Coach O’Brien is the right man to be our head coach.” James acknowledged the need for Boston College to adapt to changes in intercollegiate athletics, notably the recent legal settlement allowing colleges to share revenue directly with student-athletes. He confirmed that the athletic program would increase its commitment to this revenue sharing, aligning it more closely with peers in their conference.
Furthermore, James promised that Boston College would bolster its football program through significant investments in operational and administrative support. As part of this restructuring, the university revealed the hiring of Kenyatta Watson as the new general manager. A former Eagles player and assistant general manager at Auburn, Watson is expected to bring fresh insights to the program.
O’Brien, who has a college coaching record of 24-25 over four seasons, initially joined Boston College with a 7-6 record, leading them to the Pinstripe Bowl in his first year. Prior to his role at Boston College, he served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and enjoyed successful tenures at Penn State and with the NFL’s Houston Texans. The challenges he has faced in recent seasons, both collegiate and professional, have been a focal point of discussion, particularly regarding his ability to maximize talent on the field.
