On December 10th, the V Foundation held its annual Boo-Yah Gala in New York City, focusing on The Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund and the debut of ESPN’s documentary, Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott. The event celebrated the legacy of the late ESPN sportscaster, who lost his battle with cancer in 2015, while highlighting the ongoing efforts to promote equity in cancer research.

For over thirty years, the V Foundation for Cancer Research has been at the forefront of funding vital cancer research initiatives. Founded by NBA legend Jim Valvano, who transformed his personal battle with cancer into a philanthropic legacy, the foundation aims to save lives by supporting research that addresses the complexities of cancer.

The Boo-Yah event underscores the importance of uniting advocates to rally behind cancer research, particularly efforts directed at tackling disparities in underserved communities. Susan Scott, President and Executive Director of the V Foundation, underscored the necessity of equitable representation in cancer research, noting how the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund fulfills this critical role. She stated, “No one grows up recognizing [that] we need equitable participation in cancer research.”

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural Stuart Scott IMPACT Award to Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss. As a cancer survivor and a dedicated advocate, Moss spoke passionately about his experience and the importance of awareness within the sports community regarding cancer support.

The gala was a tremendous success, raising over $3.1 million for cancer research efforts. James Pitaro, President and CEO of ESPN, encouraged viewers at home to contribute, emphasizing that 100% of donations go directly to research initiatives. To date, the V Foundation has raised more than $400 million, with a significant portion of that coming from ESPN’s contributions.

The release of the Boo-Yah documentary alongside the fundraising event added a poignant touch to the night. Produced by Andre Gaines, the film offers an intimate look at Stuart Scott’s life, including his struggles with appendiceal cancer and the lasting impact of his legacy as a beloved sports figure. Viewers can watch Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott on ESPN, the ESPN app, and Disney+, ensuring that Scott’s story continues to inspire and resonate with audiences.
