In a statement released via X around 7pm, authorities urged anyone present at Bondi Beach to seek shelter as they worked to manage the situation. Witnesses reported alarming scenes, with video footage showing two men in black clothing crossing a bridge at the beach and firing shots, accompanied by screams from bystanders.
Approximately forty minutes later, law enforcement confirmed that they had taken two people into custody; however, they cautioned that the police operation was still active, and residents should heed all police directives and refrain from crossing into secured areas.
NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed his concern regarding the incident, calling the reports and images emerging from Bondi “deeply distressing.” He assured the public that police and emergency services were promptly addressing the situation and promised further updates as more information became available.
The incident occurred on the first day of Hanukkah, a significant Jewish festival, celebrated with community events such as the Annual Chanukah Festival, which was promoted to begin at 5pm on the same day.
