Indian cinema has emerged as a significant catalyst for fostering community ties and reinforcing the historical bonds between Fiji and India, as highlighted by Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, during the opening ceremony of the Indian Film Festival in Nakasi on Thursday.
Kiran expressed that films act as a conduit, enabling Fiji to sustain its connection to Indian traditions, values, and celebrations across generations. “Cinema stands as one of humanity’s most influential cultural expressions, capturing stories, emotions, and histories that resonate across borders,” she emphasized. The minister noted that Hindi films have gained widespread popularity among various ethnic groups in Fiji, with many individuals embracing the Hindi language, music, and cultural values portrayed in cinema.
She stated, “In Fiji, people of all ethnicities, cultures, and traditions have grown with Hindi cinema. Many of our iTaukei brothers and sisters have picked up the Hindi language and songs from movies over the last three generations.” Kiran underscored that films extend beyond mere entertainment, possessing the potential to effect social change by tackling themes of dignity, compassion, and justice. “Films are powerful tools for advocacy. Through honest storytelling, cinema can challenge harmful norms and inspire empathy and dialogue,” she added.
Furthermore, Kiran acknowledged India’s significant support during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the provision of vaccines that greatly benefited Fiji. “We remain thankful for the strengthening of our partnership in the medical sector,” she stated. She affirmed that collaboration between Fiji and India is ongoing, expanding across various sectors such as healthcare, education, and youth development, while cultural initiatives like the film festival promote unity, national pride, and shared values within the community.
This celebration of cinema not only emphasizes Fiji’s rich and diverse cultural identity but also fortifies the enduring friendship between Fiji and India, highlighting the positive impacts of cultural exchange in our interconnected global society.
