Nacani Boginisoko, a newcomer for FIJI Airways Fiji men’s 7s team, made a remarkable debut during the opening day of the Singapore 7s on Saturday night. Taking to the field for his first career start against South Africa, Boginisoko displayed exceptional talent in a highly charged atmosphere.
The match was fiercely contested, culminating in a 19–19 tie at the end of regulation time, which resulted in a golden-point extra time to decide the winner. Fiji kicked off the extra period, but it was South Africa that initially pressed forward. However, a cross-field kick that worked well earlier faltered, allowing Fiji to reclaim possession from the following lineout.
In an impressive show of skill, Boginisoko received the ball on the right flank and, demonstrating remarkable strength and speed, charged through the defensive line to score a decisive try under the posts. His effort clinched a thrilling victory for Fiji.
Coach Osea Kolinisau shared his rationale behind rotating the squad, aimed at providing younger players with vital experience after advancing to the semi-finals. “South Africa was not going to be easy. I made some changes so that the young players can get a taste of what to expect tomorrow,” he explained.
While celebrating the win, Kolinisau also noted areas for improvement, such as missed tackles and unnecessary knock-ons. “These are things which can be sorted out before the semis,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for refinement as they look ahead.
With Fiji set to face New Zealand in the semi-finals later that night, the excitement for the continuation of the Singapore 7s tournament remains high. This performance not only underscores the promise of emerging talents like Boginisoko but also illustrates the team’s resilience and determination to finish strong in the competition. The spirit of teamwork and the quest for excellence shine brightly as Fiji aims for glory on the global stage.
