As the year comes to a close, residents of Binghamton should prepare for a chilly New Year’s Eve, with snow showers and windy conditions expected to accompany the celebration. Meteorologist Ema Sera from the National Weather Service Binghamton has shared that lake effect snow showers will be making their way to the area on December 31 and are likely to persist into the following week.

On New Year’s Eve, the day is shaping up to start with a slim chance of morning snow, which is expected to escalate significantly by the afternoon. The forecast predicts a 60-70% chance of snow showers beginning after 1 p.m., accompanied by gusty winds from the southwest at speeds of 6 to 9 mph, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph. The temperature is expected to peak around 28 degrees during the day.

As evening approaches, the probability of precipitation rises dramatically with a 90% chance of snow, forecasting about an inch of accumulation. Binghamton residents can expect a total of 1-2 inches of snow from the afternoon through midnight, with temperatures dipping to around 13 degrees by nightfall.

Looking ahead to New Year’s Day, the weather will calm down somewhat with only a 20% chance of snow showers in the afternoon and temperatures reaching a high of about 21 degrees. Sera indicated that there may also be potential snow squalls overnight, but the details were not fully confirmed.

From January 2 to 4, the weather will remain relatively quiet, although there will be a 30% chance of snow showers on January 2, with afternoon highs near 27 degrees. For residents, January 3 will bring partly sunny skies with temperatures hitting around 26 degrees, and January 4 is expected to start off precipitation-free, with a chance for evening snow showers.

Overall, while those heading out for New Year’s celebrations may need to bundle up, the snow could add a picturesque touch to the festivities.
