Journalist Benjamin Hall, known for his courageous reporting from conflict zones around the world, has channeled his experiences into a new picture book titled “Read All About It!” Illustrated by Martina Motzo and published by HarperCollins, the book features an aspiring hedgehog journalist who becomes a hero within his community. Hall’s personal journey is the heart of the story, deeply inspired by a toy hedgehog given to him by his daughters, which represented a source of comfort during his recovery from serious injuries sustained in Ukraine in 2022.

Reflecting on his experiences, Hall explained that during his recovery, the toy hedgehog served as a way to communicate with his daughters, sending them “messages” that reassured them of his safety. This bond with his family became paramount, particularly after he recognized the importance of prioritizing family over work following his injury.

Hall emphasized that while reporting often focuses on conflict, the true essence of every story lies within the experiences of families—parents and children navigating their lives amidst adversity. His personal challenge of adapting to children’s literature revealed a different side of storytelling. Hall engaged his daughters in the creative process, incorporating their suggestions and ideas into the storyline, illustrating the joys of collaboration and the insights children can provide.

The theme of journalism runs throughout the story, as Hall aims to highlight the crucial role journalists play in fostering understanding within communities. He remarked on the current challenges journalism faces in an era dominated by social media and misinformation, asserting that the true essence of storytelling—conveying the sights, sounds, and experiences of a location—cannot be replaced by AI or mere fact lists.

Through the adventures of the hedgehog, Hall hopes to instill in children the importance of standing up for what is right and encouraging them to tell their stories and seek the truth, adding that he envisions classrooms engaging in similar storytelling exercises inspired by the book.

Looking to the future, Hall expressed optimism about the potential for further adventures with the hedgehog character, eager to impart valuable lessons to young readers. His new book, “Read All About It!” set to release on March 3, carries a message of resilience, courage, and the significance of community journalism.
