The pre-season has officially concluded, and the excitement is palpable as the 30th edition of Super Rugby Pacific kicks off. The Fijian Drua will begin their fifth season with a highly anticipated match against Moana Pasifika in Lautoka, sparking what many are dubbing the “Battle of the Pacific.”

This match carries the potential to be the standout of the round, particularly if both teams leverage their signature expansive playing styles that showcase their Pacific flair and skills. With new faces on both rosters, it will be essential for the players to connect and perform effectively right from the start.

This fierce rivalry has seen the Drua maintain a slight edge in their head-to-head meetings, boasting four victories compared to Moana’s two losses. Notably, four encounters have been decided by just seven points or fewer, with a narrow overall points difference of only three points between the teams — Drua at 192 and Moana at 189.

Head Coach Glen Jackson has crafted a promising squad for this season. The Drua was established to offer local talent the chance to pursue professional careers without the need to leave Fiji and its warm community. While some players are still drawn to lucrative offers abroad, a growing number of Fijian stars are returning home, eager to contribute to their national team. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see the impact that players such as Mayanavanua, Vakatawa, Fines-Leleiwasa, and Mataele will have.

However, the Drua will need to fill the significant gaps left by departing stars like Ikanivere, Masi, Ravutaumada, and Muntz. Yet, the current squad is rich in experience, featuring 20 internationals in the match-day 23. The three players who have yet to earn test caps are prepared on the bench, adding depth to the lineup.

The return of Virimi Vakatawa, a former stalwart of the French rugby scene, is particularly exciting. His veteran presence, especially after many games in the French 7s, is anticipated to be invaluable. Meanwhile, the addition of Temo Mayanavanua — a former player for Lyon and Northampton Saints — brings leadership as he takes on the role of co-captain alongside Frank Lomani. Mayanavanua’s international experience will be crucial in navigating challenging matches, particularly on the road.

Fijian powerhouse Isoa Nasilasila will also feature prominently, marking his 51st appearance for the Drua, making him the all-time player in the club’s history. Both he and flanker Kitione Salawa, as foundation members of the team, serve as inspirations to the next generation of players.

On the Moana Pasifika side, despite their two prior losses on Fijian soil, the team remains competitive and is coming off of a solid year where they had notable victories. The absence of All Black star Ardie Savea, who is currently on sabbatical in Japan, opens the floor for new talents. Ngani Laumape, a former All Black and current signing, is set to make his Super Rugby Pacific debut since 2021, and his matchup against Vakatawa is highly anticipated.

Moana also features a mix of Samoan and Tongan internationals, but they face a challenge with overall test experience compared to the Drua. Players like William Havili will be making history by becoming the first Moana player to reach 50 caps, a milestone that highlights his dedication and growth within the team.

With four exciting home games lined up in Lautoka, it’s crucial for the Drua to earn points early and establish a strong start to their season, unlike previous years. A successful outcome against Moana and good performances on their upcoming road trip against the Waratahs could significantly aid their aspirations for a top-four finish.

As the season gears up, anticipation runs high. Coach Jackson emphasizes a week-by-week approach, acknowledging the importance of building a successful campaign. Having been in the Commentary Box for five years now, excitement is brewing for this matchup, with many predicting a victory for the Drua as they try for a tenth consecutive win at home.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for an engaging curtain-raiser featuring the Drua Development Team against an Australian-Fijian combination, kicking off at 12:30 PM. Toso Drua toso!
