The Province of Ba is taking significant steps to address the growing concern of drug influence by implementing stringent regulations and leveraging traditional taboos across its regions. In a conversation with FBC News, Provincial Council Chair Ratu Meli Tora underscored the urgency of this issue, especially following a major drug bust at Vatia Wharf, which he perceives as a critical wake-up call for immediate action.
Ratu Meli acknowledged the worsening situation and expressed regret over a missed chance for traditional leaders to intervene sooner. “We should have been proactive,” he remarked, pointing out that drug problems have been growing in neighboring countries, and local leadership had fallen short in preparing for these challenges to reach their shores.
The Ba areas, notably from Vatia to Sonaisali, are particularly vulnerable due to significant tourism activities centered around Nadi, which can intensify the drug issue. To combat this threat, Ratu Meli commended local leaders, such as the Tui Sabeto and Tui Vuda, for their dedication to the anti-drug campaign, which includes a temporary ban on the use of yaqona, alcohol, and cigarettes. This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering a drug-free environment.
Furthermore, Ratu Meli highlighted the necessity of collaborating with the Provincial Officer to tackle drug-related issues comprehensively throughout Ba, including informal settlements. This collective strategy aims to enhance community resilience against the influence of drugs and promote a healthier atmosphere for both residents and tourists. The proactive measures and commitment displayed by local leaders spotlight a promising resurgence in the fight against drug challenges within the Province of Ba.
