Vinod Patel Ba is set to face the Drua Development XV in an exciting opening match for the Super Rugby event on March 14, taking place at the historic 4R Govind Park. This match will precede the main fixture between the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and the Brumbies, marking a significant moment for local rugby enthusiasts.

Daksesh Patel, President of the Ba Rugby Union, expressed that competing against the Drua Development is a tremendous honor for the Vinod Patel Ba team. He noted the heritage of Govind Park, which was established in 1976 and named after former mayor Kishore Govind, highlighting the venue’s historical significance as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Patel emphasized that this initiative will energize senior players in their off-season training as they prepare for the Skipper Cup in 2026. He reiterated the union’s commitment not just to nurture a strong rugby team, but also to support community development and encourage young athletes to pursue their education, thereby offering them various pathways for their futures.

“Traditionally, Ba has faced challenges in becoming a strong rugby province and still trails behind other major unions in resources, experience, and facilities,” Patel acknowledged. However, he remains optimistic about their efforts to promote social integration, reduce isolation, and create proper development pathways for players and officials.

The significance of the Fijian Drua in the local rugby scene cannot be overstated, with Patel noting the admiration local players have for them. He believes that this match could further solidify the relationship between provincial rugby and the Drua, enhancing the overall development of the sport.

Supporting this sentiment, Fijian Drua development coach Nemani Nadolo-Kuridrani expressed his excitement about the lineup for the curtain-raisers, which also features Malolo and the Aussie Fijians U20s. He remarked that these additional matches would provide fans with a unique opportunity to enjoy double the action on the same day.

Patel expressed his gratitude for the Drua’s invitation and highlighted the warm welcome that the Ba Rugby Union and the local community will extend to the Drua Development team on March 14. This collaboration is seen not merely as a game, but as a vital step forward in the growth of rugby in the region, fostering both competitive spirit and community unity.
