James Cameron’s latest installment in the Avatar franchise, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” has achieved an impressive global box office gross of approximately $760.4 million as of Sunday. This film has taken in $542.7 million from international markets alone.

In its second weekend, “Fire and Ash” garnered $181.2 million overseas, indicating a modest 25% decline in ticket sales from the previous weekend, or 15% when excluding results from China. The movie is currently ranked as the fifth highest-grossing release of 2025 according to the Motion Picture Association, while the combined earnings of the Avatar trilogy have surpassed an astonishing $6 billion worldwide.

In China, “Fire and Ash” is on the verge of breaking the $100 million milestone, with a current total of $99.6 million, making it only the second Hollywood film this year to approach that figure, following Disney’s “Zootopia 2.” The latter has also performed exceptionally well, with worldwide earnings of $1.42 billion, of which $1.1 billion comes from international markets. This positions “Zootopia 2” as the highest-grossing animated film globally and the third such release in history to reach the billion-dollar mark internationally.

Weekend box office results also highlighted the release of Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants,” which opened to $22.1 million internationally across 76% of its offshore market, bringing its total to $60.3 million globally. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Wicked: For Good” has crossed the $500 million mark, registering slight growth in domestic earnings alongside a modest international decline. Another notable mention is “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” which has surpassed $100 million internationally.

Adding to the excitement, Sony’s comedy “Anaconda,” featuring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, launched to a strong $20 million across 58 overseas markets. This initial performance marks the best international opening for a comedy since 2013, culminating in a global total of $43.7 million.

The overall landscape of cinema shows resilience and audience enthusiasm, as these films continue to captivate viewers worldwide, promising a vibrant box office year ahead.
