The Australian High Commission has taken steps to address what it refers to as “incorrect information” circulating online about the upgrade projects at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva. In a recent social media post, the High Commission clarified its financial commitments and detailed the ongoing initiatives at the facility.

Australia has committed FJD $14.5 million (approximately AUD $10 million) to facilitate essential upgrades at CWM Hospital, coinciding with Fiji’s plans for a new national referral hospital. The High Commission emphasized its partnership with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, along with the hospital staff, to prioritize immediate repair work. Local architects and engineers have been engaged to evaluate the projects, and Australian funds will be allocated to hire local contractors for the execution of the upgrades.

Currently, the mission outlined investments totaling FJD $6.7 million across various initiatives. Among them are roofing repairs at both CWM and St Giles Hospitals, expected to take place from December 2025 to May 2026. Improvements in acute patient wards are also underway, focusing on upgrading bathroom facilities, accessibility, pantry areas, and staff spaces from January to June 2026. Other significant upgrades include a new 200,000-litre water tank with filtration and pump systems, along with sewer remediation at the maternity building, also planned for January to June 2026.

Furthermore, plans for a second phase of upgrades worth FJD $7.8 million are in progress, which will be developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and CWM Hospital. The High Commission noted that these renovations form part of the broader Vuvale Partnership between Fiji and Australia, highlighting a dedication to improving essential services and building community resilience.

This partnership illustrates a forward-thinking approach to healthcare enhancements in Fiji, aiming to promote better health outcomes and strengthen the infrastructure necessary for community wellbeing. The commitment to local engagement and partnership reflects a promising future for the healthcare landscape in Fiji.
