The Australian High Commission has sought to clarify what it describes as “incorrect information” being shared online regarding the ongoing upgrade works at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva. In a recent social media statement, the High Commission highlighted its financial commitments and the projects currently in progress at the facility.

According to the statement, Australia has pledged FJD $14.5 million (approximately AUD $10 million) to support crucial upgrades at CWM Hospital, which come as Fiji advances plans for a new national referral hospital. The High Commission emphasized its collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, as well as CWM Hospital staff, to prioritize urgent repair works. Local architects and engineers have been engaged to assess the projects, and Australian funding will be utilized to hire local companies for the execution of the upgrades.

Among the active projects, the mission detailed investments totaling FJD $6.7 million. Key initiatives include roofing repairs at both CWM and St Giles Hospitals, slated to occur from December 2025 to May 2026. Additionally, improvements in acute patient wards are underway, focusing on enhancing bathroom facilities, accessibility, pantry upgrades, and staff areas from January to June 2026. Other significant enhancements include the installation of a new 200,000-litre water tank complete with filtration and pump systems, as well as sewer remediation at the maternity building, also scheduled for January to June 2026.

Planning for a second phase of upgrades valued at FJD $7.8 million has commenced, which will be finalized in partnership with the Ministry of Health and CWM Hospital. The High Commission notes that these upgrades are part of the broader Vuvale Partnership between Fiji and Australia, underscoring a commitment to strengthen essential services and enhance community resilience.

This robust partnership reflects a proactive approach to healthcare improvements in Fiji, aiming to foster better health outcomes and infrastructure for the community.
