ACTING President and Chief Justice Salesi Temo addressed the Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions, calling on delegates to become fearless advocates in the pursuit of human rights amidst urgent global challenges. At the forum’s opening, he emphasized the importance of strengthening national human rights institutions to ensure they remain independent and effective in upholding rights.
Justice Temo articulated the necessity for robust institutions, explaining that those lacking principles could not adequately protect the rights of the vulnerable. He highlighted the pressing issue of climate change as one of the defining challenges of our era, underscoring that for the Pacific, this issue is not merely theoretical; it poses existential threats to communities.
The conference aims to incorporate diverse voices from civil society and regional experts, heralding a collective journey towards empowering communities and individuals to claim their rights. Temo emphasized the selected theme, “Shared Journeys Across the Asia Pacific: Advancing Human Rights,” recognizing both the common struggles and the commitments shared across the region.
Addressing the severe impacts of climate change, Temo highlighted the displacement of communities and destruction of livelihoods, specifically citing that 676 communities in Fiji could face relocation due to rising sea levels and extreme weather. He stressed that translating global commitments into local actions requires resilience, inclusivity, and justice.
Furthermore, the Justice emphasized the intrinsic connection between a healthy environment and human rights, stating that a healthy environment is essential for the enjoyment of all other rights, particularly the right to life. He urged the protection of environmental defenders, who often risk personal safety in their advocacy.
