Mikel Arteta has indicated that Declan Rice is still a doubt for Arsenal’s upcoming match against Bournemouth this weekend. Rice did not feature in the midweek victory over Aston Villa due to a knee issue sustained during the match against Brighton on December 17th. Although the England international is expected to participate in training on Friday, Arteta expressed concern that the swelling in Rice’s knee has yet to diminish.

“Not yet. We have another session today. Let’s see how he comes through today and how he’s feeling, but it was too early that game for him,” Arteta stated during his pre-match press conference.

Despite having completed the full 90 minutes against Brighton, Rice experienced worsening symptoms after the game, which Arteta acknowledged when he said, “Sometimes you get a hit and throughout the game you are able, with adrenaline and because you are warm, to sustain that. And then the body reacts [after the game] and it reacted probably more than we expected, unfortunately, and that’s where we are.”

On a more positive note, Arsenal will likely benefit from the return of Kai Havertz, who was available to be on the bench during the midweek match. The German forward has had limited playtime this season, totaling only 31 minutes but will add depth to the squad alongside Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus, who has recently returned from injury.

Arteta emphasized the importance of having a complete team to choose from, stating, “It helps the team, it helps every individual [to have to fight for their place]. I think that’s what we want to have the options, with the manner of the games we have and the schedule.” He is optimistic about having all players fit and ready to compete for their positions, allowing for more strategic flexibility as the season progresses.
