Armenia’s commitment to peace with Azerbaijan remains strong, according to Gevorg Papoyan, a key member of the ruling “Civil Contract” party and the Minister of Economy. During a recent briefing, Papoyan addressed comments made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in an interview with France 24, where Aliyev suggested that constitutional amendments in Armenia are necessary for the formalization of a peace treaty.

Papoyan clarified that the Armenian Constitution does not hinder the signing of a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, as supported by a definitive assessment from the Constitutional Court. He emphasized, “Our stance remains unchanged: we are ready to sign a peace treaty even tomorrow. The process has already begun and is making good progress. An important result has been reached – no casualties at the border.”

The Minister highlighted the ongoing implementation of major infrastructure projects in Armenia, backed by American investments, viewing these developments as pivotal for sustaining long-term peace and fostering economic growth in the region. He echoed the sentiment that cooperation and investment are vital to ensuring stability and prosperity.

In his interview, President Aliyev conveyed optimism regarding the completion of legal formalities, including the proposed amendments to the Armenian Constitution and an upcoming referendum, which he believes could pave the way for a formal peace between the two nations. These discussions suggest a forward-looking approach to resolving longstanding conflicts in the region, potentially benefiting both Armenia and Azerbaijan in the pursuit of lasting peace and development.
