Northern and eastern Arizona are experiencing a mix of rain and snow through Saturday, prompting a winter weather advisory for the Kaibab Plateau. As temperatures in Phoenix are expected to drop from the mid-70s to a more seasonal upper 60s this weekend, residents should prepare for increasingly unsettled weather as rain chances rise for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

On Friday, Phoenix saw a high of 74 degrees, remaining 9 degrees above the norm. Overnight temperatures in the Valley will stay mild in the 50s, but a new weather system will introduce cooler air and active conditions across the state. Light rain is forecast to continue into Saturday morning in areas north and east of Phoenix, while the Kaibab Plateau may receive between 2 to 4 inches of snow at elevations up to 7,500 feet, starting at midnight through Saturday evening.

Looking ahead to the weekend, clouds are expected to decrease, and temperatures will return to average levels in the upper 60s, with overnight lows dipping into the 40s. A subsequent weather system is anticipated to bring increased rain chances over the New Year’s holiday.

Travelers heading to northern Arizona for snow activities are advised by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to refrain from parking alongside highways to play in the snow due to the risks it poses to both vehicle operators and first responders. Safety tips from ADOT highlight the necessity of preparedness for driving in winter conditions, including essential items like warm clothing, blankets, a flashlight, drinking water, healthy snacks, and tools for vehicle maintenance such as an ice scraper and a small folding shovel.

For those navigating through heavy rain or flood conditions, the American Red Cross emphasizes the importance of safety measures: avoiding flooded roads, evacuating swiftly when necessary, and staying informed through local news channels.

In light of the winter weather and upcoming holiday activities, it’s essential for Arizona residents to remain vigilant and prepared, ensuring safe travels and a joyful New Year celebration despite the shifting climate.
