At the Arab International Media Dialogue Forum, held in Libya, Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, the Assistant Secretary-General for Media and Communication of the Arab League, called for a “courageous and credible dialogue” between the Arab world and the West. He emphasized that such engagement should be anchored in mutual trust and respect, aiming for constructive communication that transcends historical misunderstandings.

Khattabi commended Libya for its hospitality in hosting the forum and highlighted that the event aligns with the implementation of the Arab Media Strategy, which prioritizes key issues such as the Palestinian cause, the fight against extremism, and the promotion of Arab identity. His remarks underscored the importance of dialogue that is devoid of notions of superiority and prejudice, arguing that acknowledging and managing differences is crucial for fostering understanding.

Throughout his address, Khattabi pointed to the rich historical tradition of coexistence in the Arab world, particularly referencing the Andalusian model, as a testament to the potential for renewed intercultural dialogue that breaks free from “orientalist stereotypes.” He stressed that the media and digital platforms play a vital role in shaping a modern and accurate portrayal of Arab societies, especially given the current global solidarity with Palestine and the humanitarian crises resulting from ongoing conflicts in Gaza.

Additionally, he highlighted the Arab League’s long-standing participation in the UN Alliance of Civilizations’ Group of Friends, a partnership that has spanned over two decades. In this context, Khattabi revealed that the League is in the process of developing a unified strategy for the years 2026 to 2031, aimed at promoting peace, tolerance, and sustainable development across the region. As these discussions unfold, there is hope that renewed efforts in dialogue and cooperation can lead to improved relations and understanding in a global context.
