Apple is reportedly in the process of integrating OLED technology into its more affordable products, with the iPad mini 8 expected to lead the way. This tablet is set to feature a significant display enhancement compared to its predecessor, the iPad mini 7, while retaining its compact design. According to recent information from ETNews, the anticipated launch of the iPad mini 8 is scheduled for the third or fourth quarter of 2026, largely aligned with Samsung’s OLED production timeline.
Samsung has been assigned the task of supplying OLED panels for the iPad mini 8, with an estimated output of around 3 million units annually. The iPad mini 8 will come equipped with an 8.4-inch display, and mass production of these OLED screens is expected to commence in July next year. Transitioning from the Ips LCD used in the iPad mini 7 to OLED technology promises to be a substantial upgrade, although it’s noteworthy that the mini will not adopt LTPO technology, which allows for features like ProMotion support. Instead, the iPad mini 8 will utilize a simpler single-light-emitting layer and low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT.
While this new display marks a significant step forward, it indicates that Apple is unlikely to provide premium features typically found in higher-end models, like the 11-inch or 13-inch M5 iPad Pro models, which utilize advanced tandem OLED technology. This could influence buyers who might otherwise consider the iPad Pro for its superior OLED technology, as the cost of upgrading may diminish its allure.
In parallel with the iPad mini 8, Apple has plans to expand OLED technology to the iPad Air, although this upgrade is not expected to materialize until 2028, according to sources familiar with the matter. An anonymous display insider has pointed out that the transition for the iPad Air will take additional years, and consumers should prepare for higher price points associated with the OLED upgrade on the mini.
Additionally, the upcoming OLED M6 MacBook Pro, set to launch alongside the iPad mini 8, is anticipated to feature a significant redesign, including a notchless touchscreen and a slimmer chassis. The advanced OLED display will, however, be exclusive to the M6 Pro and M6 Max models.
This move towards OLED displays in Apple’s more affordable devices signals the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience while maintaining competitive pricing.
