AMC Theatres Posts Q3 Slump as Box Office Dips, Sequel Comeback Hopes Rise

AMC Theatres, the largest theater chain globally, faced challenges in its most recent quarterly earnings, driven by a lackluster film lineup compared to last summer’s successes. While titles such as “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Weapons,” and “Superman” registered box office earnings, their performance fell short of hits like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Despicable Me 4” from the previous year.

For the three months ending in September, AMC’s revenues declined to $1.3 billion, reflecting a 3.6% decrease from the previous year. The company reported a net loss of $298.2 million, significantly higher than the $20.7 million loss recorded in the same quarter last year. According to AMC, deeper losses were largely attributed to non-cash charges linked to a significant refinancing of its debt in July 2025. The adjusted net loss stood at $110 million, expanding from $15.9 million in the prior-year quarter, with a loss of 21 cents per share compared to 4 cents a year earlier.

Admissions fell to $715.1 million, down from $744.2 million in 2024, while food and beverage sales decreased to $451.8 million from $490.4 million in the same quarter last year, indicating dwindling patronage at theaters as this summer’s blockbuster contenders failed to generate expected excitement.

Despite the downturn, AMC surpassed Wall Street’s expectations, which predicted third-quarter revenue of $1.23 billion, aligning its adjusted losses with forecasts. Adam Aron, AMC’s chairman and CEO, commented on the company’s performance, noting, “Calendar year 2025 is turning out exactly as we have long predicted,” referencing the fluctuating nature of studio release schedules that have impacted their film performance throughout the year.

As the year progresses, there remains hope for a resurgence. Box office revenues for October dropped to their lowest levels since 1997, alongside disappointing releases such as “Tron: Ares” and “The Smashing Machine.” However, anticipation builds for upcoming sequels to popular films such as “Zootopia,” “Wicked,” and “Avatar,” set to debut in the next two months. Moreover, AMC saw a bright spot in October with the limited release of “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” attracting large audiences and reinforcing the potential for recovery as the year comes to a close.
