The new Alki Elementary School in West Seattle, situated at 3010 59th SW, is making significant progress as it prepares to open its doors for the 2026-2027 school year. An aerial view provided by Seattle Public Schools showcases the ongoing construction on the west and south sides of the building, highlighting the efforts that are currently underway. A live webcam offers a current glimpse of the school’s north-facing front.
One of the primary focuses of the project is the reconstruction of the road surface on 59th Avenue. The project team has announced that the western half of the road will undergo demolition and will be replaced by mid-January. Daytime closures are currently in effect during the construction work, but the street will be open to traffic during after-hours as work allows.
Recent updates from the construction team indicate that they have successfully completed several key tasks over the past month, including the installation of gypsum concrete floor topping, ceiling grid setup, mechanical system rough-ins, masonry work, exterior glazing, and metal panel installation for the mechanical penthouse. Moving forward, they are progressing on several additional aspects such as the repaving of 59th Avenue, installation of interior lighting and cabinets, finish carpentry, acoustical treatments, and tile work.
Upcoming milestones include the finalization of interior finishes, such as painting and flooring for the Community Center, as well as the completion of bioretention facilities and the connection to permanent power.
Currently, staff and students of Alki Elementary are operating from the former Schmitz Park Elementary campus, where the school has 266 enrolled students, slightly more than half of the intended capacity of the new building. Additionally, the district has announced that the Open Enrollment period for School Choice is now open, allowing families to explore educational options for the upcoming school year.
The development of the new Alki Elementary School represents a positive step for the community, providing modern facilities that will enhance educational opportunities for students in the area.
