Akron Braces for Winter Storm Chan: Snow, Travel Disruptions Ahead

A winter storm is poised to impact the Greater Akron area early Tuesday morning, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory that will remain in effect from midnight until 7 p.m. that day. Residents can anticipate total snow accumulation between three to seven inches, with the heaviest snowfall occurring during the morning commute. This situation is likely to create challenging and hazardous road conditions for drivers.

The storm, identified as Winter Storm Chan, is expected to bring significant snow between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., with lake-enhanced snow showers continuing into the afternoon. Snowfall rates could reach between half an inch to nearly an inch per hour at the storm’s peak. For schoolchildren, this may result in some experiencing their first snow day of the year.

Following the winter storm, the week ahead in Akron will be chilly, with daytime highs only reaching the 30s and nighttime lows dropping to the teens by Thursday. Additionally, a light dusting of snow could occur on Wednesday, while the risk of rain and snow returns again on Friday.

The forecast highlights partly sunny conditions today, with a high around 34 degrees and a high chance of snow overnight leading into Tuesday. As the storm unfolds, the community should remain cautious and prepared for winter travel impacts.
