This compilation recognizes significant contributions in legacy, liberty, and justice, filled with Black leadership and innovation. With a goal of documenting history clearly for future generations, NNPA conducted extensive research across its network of over 200 member newspapers, which collectively reach 20 million readers weekly.
Leading the list is civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who emerged as a prominent figure in national discourse following the Trayvon Martin case. Crump has been featured in more headlines than any other Black American for the past 25 years, surpassing notable figures such as former President Barack Obama and prominent entertainers and athletes. His work primarily revolves around legal battles addressing civil rights issues and advocating for families affected by systemic injustices.
Crump expressed that his media presence highlights ongoing constitutional crises and the significant losses faced by families he represents, emphasizing that the attention is not personal but rather a call for justice. His pivotal role since the Martin case has established him as a crucial advocate for Black lives, as he led cases that resonate across America, including those of Michael Brown, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor.
While Obama, the first Black president, captivated headlines through his political journey, Crump’s appearances stem from legal advocacy, contrasting the nature of their public visibility. Other top newsmakers include sports legends like Serena Williams, LeBron James, and Simone Biles, showcasing excellence and breaking barriers within their fields. Vice President Kamala Harris and media mogul Oprah Winfrey further illustrate the diverse accomplishments of Black Americans in politics and entertainment.
Crump’s influence transcends legal victories as he’s become a symbol of empowerment and representation. Recently, he secured a historic $779.3 million verdict for the family of Lewis Butler, making a significant statement on the value of Black life. Crump continues to advocate for justice, striving to raise the profile of Black lives in America amidst ongoing struggles against inequality.
As the NNPA highlights these influential figures, it emphasizes the representation of Black culture and the shared dreams and achievements of the community in the 21st century, reaffirming the importance of documenting these impactful narratives for generations to come.
