7.5-magnitude quake hits northeastern Japan as tsunami warnings downgraded

7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Off NE Japan Triggers Tsunami Alerts, Then Downgraded

A powerful earthquake registering 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Japan late Monday night, resulting in the evacuation of around 90,000 residents and triggering tsunami warnings that were later adjusted to advisories. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) indicated that the earthquake, which occurred offshore at 11:15 p.m. local time (1415 GMT), could potentially generate a tsunami with wave heights reaching up to 3 meters (10 feet) along the northeastern coastline.

Tsunami warnings were initially issued for the regions of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures. Following the quake, tsunamis measuring between 20 to 70 centimeters (7 to 27 inches) were detected at several ports. However, early Tuesday morning, the JMA reassessed the situation and downgraded the tsunami warnings to advisories, reflecting lower wave height estimates and diminished flooding risks.

The earthquake’s epicenter was reported to be 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the Aomori coast, at a depth of 54 kilometers. It registered as an “upper 6” on Japan’s 1-7 intensity scale in Hachinohe city, Aomori prefecture, indicating severe shaking that could impede mobility and cause significant structural damage, including the potential collapse of heavy furniture and breakage of windows and wall tiles.

As of 1700 GMT, public broadcaster NHK noted no major structural damage or serious injuries had been reported. A hotel employee in Hachinohe mentioned that while some individuals were hospitalized with injuries, they were all conscious and responsive. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that seven injuries had been documented.

In light of safety concerns, East Japan Railway suspended certain services in the affected regions, which are still recovering from the catastrophic 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck in March 2011. The community’s resilience and preparedness continue to shine through as residents face this latest natural threat, demonstrating steadfastness in the face of adversity.
