According to The New York Times, Zuckerberg has invested over $110 million in acquiring at least 11 residences in the Crescent Park neighborhood over the past 14 years. This once peaceful area, home to professionals and academics, has been significantly altered by construction activity related to his expanding residential compound, marked by the presence of heavy machinery and increased security measures.
While some of the homes remain vacant amidst a local housing shortage, others have been transformed into guest accommodations and recreational facilities, including a pickleball court and an underground pool equipped with a hydrofloor. Notably, there are facilities that functioned as a private school, raising concerns regarding compliance with local zoning laws.
Residents have expressed concerns over years of construction, including ongoing noise, street blockages, and debris. In response to the community’s frustration, Zuckerberg has made efforts to minimize disruption beyond what is legally required, as stated by a spokesperson. Despite these initiatives, including gift packages of sparkling wine and doughnuts from staff during noisy periods, the criticisms persist, with neighbors noting a positive shift in their community has been overshadowed by the billionaire’s influence and the security presence surrounding his properties.
This is not the first time Zuckerberg has encountered challenges with local real estate projects. In 2016, a proposal to demolish four homes for development was rejected by city officials. Since then, he has modified his approach, proceeding with smaller projects to navigate regulatory obstacles. Critics argue that these strategies exploit zoning loopholes and expose issues within the city’s regulatory framework.
