Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa highlighted the necessity of eradicating the stigma surrounding leprosy during the World Leprosy Day celebration held in Suva. With this year’s theme, “Leprosy is curable, the real challenge is stigma,” Ravunawa emphasized the importance of dignity and inclusion for those affected by the disease.

He stated, “The stigma is a big fight for these victims. The members of the public need to have some respect and dignity and love and compassion for these patients with leprosy.” According to him, raising public awareness and understanding about leprosy is crucial in providing better support for patients and their families.

Young leprosy survivor Tapu Lupe shared her personal journey, expressing that overcoming the disease requires discipline, patience, and a strong support system. “My experience taught me that leprosy is a treatable illness. Although the journey was challenging, I succeeded because of my family and the dedicated doctors and nurses at my hospital,” she remarked.

In Fiji, medical professionals diagnose five to seven cases of leprosy each year, highlighting the importance of continued awareness and education efforts. The celebration serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against both the disease itself and the stigma that often accompanies it, fostering a community of compassion and understanding.
