ASHE COUNTY, N.C. – A significant number of school districts in the North Carolina mountains have either closed their doors or shifted to remote learning on Monday, February 23, due to adverse weather conditions. The decision follows snowfall and subfreezing temperatures that affected the area over the weekend and into Monday morning.

In the Charlotte area, while winter precipitation was absent, temperatures still plummeted, with morning lows reaching the 20s accompanied by a sharp wind. The day’s highs are only expected to reach the 40s. Fortunately, this cold snap is predicted to be short-lived, with temperatures set to recover by the middle of the week.

Here are the school schedule changes for Monday, February 23:

Closed:
– Ashe County Public Schools
– Buncombe County Schools
– Cherokee County Schools
– Clay County Schools
– Graham County Schools
– Henderson County Public Schools
– Jackson County Public Schools
– Swain County Schools

Remote Learning:
– Avery County Schools
– Haywood County Schools
– Lees-McCrae College
– Macon County Schools
– Madison County Schools
– Mitchell County Schools
– Watauga County Schools
– Yancey County Schools

As communities rally to adapt to the winter weather conditions, the hope is that students and families can stay safe and warm while maintaining their educational momentum.
