In November, Walmart made headlines by announcing John Furner as its new CEO, marking a significant shift in leadership for the world’s largest retailer. This decision meant that Kath McLay, the previous Walmart International CEO and a strong contender for the position, would not transition to the top role.

Yesterday, Walmart confirmed that McLay will be leaving the company at the end of the month, though she will assist with the transition through the first quarter. With a decade of service at Walmart, including her previous role as CEO of Sam’s Club, McLay has made a lasting impact on the company. In her farewell statement, she expressed gratitude for her time at Walmart, stating, “It’s been a privilege… I’ve said it before, and I believe it more than ever: The world is a better place because Walmart is in it.”

McLay’s departure aligns with a larger restructuring within Walmart’s leadership under Furner. While it is always difficult to see a talented female executive exit a significant role, there is a notable promotion within the company. Latriece Watkins, currently the Chief Merchandising Officer for Walmart U.S., will take over as CEO of Sam’s Club, succeeding McLay. This transition is part of a broader strategy to reshape Walmart’s offerings to attract a more diverse customer base, particularly middle- and upper-middle-class shoppers. Watkins has previously wielded considerable influence over Walmart’s merchandise assortment, contributing to a large portion of the company’s impressive sales figures.

Watkins is poised to become one of the most prominent Black female executives in American business, and her leadership is anticipated to continue the evolution of Walmart’s brand image and product offerings. The retail industry will be closely watching her next steps as she takes the helm of Sam’s Club.

Stay tuned for updates regarding McLay’s next endeavors and the ongoing developments at Walmart during this transitional period.
