A wallaby named Rex, who recently escaped from a petting zoo in Gloucester County, has been safely recaptured following a brief adventure in the area. Rex, a small marsupial related to kangaroos, made his escape from Lots of Love Farm in the Williamstown section of Monroe on Monday. The unfortunate incident occurred when an enclosure was inadvertently left unlocked.

Authorities were alerted the same evening when Rex was spotted wandering near East Malaga Road and South Black Horse Pike, where he narrowly avoided being hit by a car. Shortly after, he was seen outside a Walmart, approximately one mile from the sanctuary.

On Tuesday, after a dedicated search effort that included community members, Rex was safely captured. The farm expressed their gratitude on Facebook, thanking “some really cool kids and a really cool dad” who assisted in his retrieval. Notably, a coach from Atlantic Coast Gymnastics played a key role in locating the adventurous wallaby.

Lots of Love Farm operates as both an animal sanctuary and a petting zoo, providing a safe haven for various animals while also engaging the community in caring for and learning about them. The successful capture of Rex highlights the community’s willingness to come together in support of local wildlife and animal welfare.
