Virmi Vakatawa has officially joined the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, finalizing the roster for the upcoming 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. His long-anticipated arrival concludes months of speculation, marking a pivotal chapter in his rugby career. The former French international and European Player of the Year has been training with the Drua in New Zealand as they gear up for their pre-season match today.

In an exclusive interview with Times Sport at the team’s camp in Ngamuwhaine Lodge, Tauranga, Vakatawa expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Drua. “I’m so blessed to be part of the Drua for this new season,” he reflected, acknowledging the journey that began with his involvement in the Naitasiri senior men’s team during last year’s Skipper Cup.

His entry into Super Rugby is a notable milestone that he has eagerly awaited. Vakatawa reminisced about watching Super 12 and Super 14 matches and praised the high caliber of athletes currently competing in Super Rugby. His experience in France has further emphasized the competitive nature of Super Rugby, especially for those transitioning from European leagues.

Returning to Fiji also represents a fresh start for Vakatawa, who has navigated numerous challenges throughout his career. He shared his heartfelt appreciation, saying, “The journey I’ve been through, it’s been tough and I want to give thanks to the Lord for coming with me and leading me throughout the journey from France.”

His teammates share in the excitement around his arrival. Tuidraki Samusamuvodre articulated his enthusiasm, highlighting the wealth of experience Vakatawa brings to the roster. “I’m excited to play again with him, especially with his CV coming along,” he noted, emphasizing how beneficial it is to have such a seasoned player join the squad.

General manager Shane Hussein reinforced this sentiment, stating that Vakatawa is eager to make a significant impact on the team. “He is hungry to make a positive contribution to the Drua both on and off the field using his wealth of experience and exceptional skill set,” Hussein remarked.

As the Fijian Drua gears up to face the Chiefs in their pre-season trial match at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui today at 2 PM, Vakatawa’s addition is expected to enhance the team’s dynamics and overall performance. The enthusiasm surrounding his inclusion signals a hopeful outlook for the upcoming season, making fans excited for what lies ahead.
