Six individuals have been charged following a large drug seizure at Vatia Wharf, and they are set to appear in the Rakiraki Magistrates Court. The State’s case will be represented by John Rabuku, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.

Authorities revealed that, after discussions with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), four Ecuadorian nationals face charges including Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs, and Unlawful Entry into Fiji, as outlined in Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 2003.

In addition to the Ecuadorian nationals, a 26-year-old man from Veisaru, Ba, is charged with Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs, two counts of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs, and a charge of Serious Assault. Another 39-year-old man, also from Veisaru, faces one charge of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs alongside a charge of Serious Assault.

The charges are a result of a coordinated police operation at Vatia Wharf, where authorities detained individuals suspected of being involved in the trafficking of illegal substances. A heightened police presence is anticipated around the town and the court area as all six accused prepare to be formally presented in court, where the prosecution will articulate its case.

Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, suggesting that there might be further charges in the future. This incident underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to tackle drug-related offenses in the area, showcasing a dedicated commitment to ensuring public safety and upholding the law.
