The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has issued a strong warning regarding the ongoing issues of vandalism and damage to road infrastructure, which are causing significant disruptions to connectivity and public services across the country. These destructive acts are not only straining resources but are also adversely affecting communities nationwide.
Two alarming incidents in Labasa have underscored the gravity of the situation. Recently, a fire at Waidamudamu Bridge on Nakorotari Road resulted in the suspension of access for residents, students, and commuters. In response, the FRA has taken swift action, restoring connectivity by installing a new bridge deck at a significant cost of approximately $130,000. While investigations are ongoing, the FRA continues to express deep concern about actions that threaten essential public services.
In addition to the Labasa incident, an October 2025 case in Batinikama saw the destruction of two heavy machines belonging to an FRA contractor, leading to a staggering loss of $1 million. Such acts of vandalism impose heavy financial burdens on contractors and introduce delays to critical road projects, ultimately compromising safety and extending inconveniences for road users.
The FRA, which oversees 6,371 kilometers of roads and more than 1,400 bridges, has warned that persistent vandalism diverts critical funds away from much-needed improvements and maintenance. In some situations, damage to equipment is so severe that contractors are forced to withdraw from projects altogether, exacerbating the challenges faced by the authority.
Moreover, the FRA has reported frequent occurrences of vandalism affecting road signs, railings, and bus shelters. Despite ongoing repair efforts, this reckless behavior continues to pose safety risks and results in unnecessary expenditures.
In light of these challenges, the FRA urges communities to come together to protect and preserve vital infrastructure, stressing that collective responsibility is key to ensuring safer and more accessible roads for everyone.
