The UConn Huskies delivered a commanding performance against the Creighton Bluejays at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn., cruising to a decisive 94-44 victory. After a solid win against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon, the top-ranked Huskies now hold a perfect record of 27-0 overall and 16-0 in the conference. They are preparing to face the second-ranked Villanova Wildcats (21-5, 14-3) on Wednesday evening.
During the matchup against Marquette, UConn began the game struggling to cope with the opposing team’s high tempo, but a strong effort from graduate guard Azzi Fudd turned the momentum. Fudd scored 25 points and showcased her shooting skills by hitting 50% of her shots from the field. “They came in super aggressive…we needed to wake up,” Fudd remarked after the game.
At halftime, the Huskies led 36-24, with sophomore Sarah Strong playing a pivotal role in maintaining that advantage. Strong notably scored 17 consecutive points during the game, further establishing herself as a key contributor to the team’s success throughout the season.
Fudd’s outstanding performance earned her the title of Big East Player of the Week as she averaged 22.0 points per game while shooting an impressive 66.7% from three-point range last week. Both Fudd and Strong received recognition by being named to the 2026 Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Late-Season team, with strong averages of 19.2 and 17.8 points per game, respectively.
Historically, UConn has had seven players awarded the Naismith Trophy a total of 11 times, with the latest recipient being Paige Bueckers in 2021.
Looking ahead to the showdown against Villanova, the Huskies will need to keep an eye on 5-foot-7 guard Jasmine Bascoe, who has been averaging 18.1 points per game and ranks second in the Big East in scoring. In their previous encounter on January 15 of this year, UConn defeated Villanova decisively, 99-50, effectively limiting Bascoe to just eight points and forcing several turnovers.
To maintain their undefeated streak in conference play, the Huskies will focus on their defensive strategies, aiming to create turnovers and control the pace of the game right from the tip-off.
In terms of injuries, redshirt junior Ice Brady will be out for the rest of the season following successful knee surgery, while Blanca Quiñonez is likely to return from her shoulder injury in time for the game against Villanova, adding depth to the squad.
The highly anticipated match between the Huskies and the Wildcats is set to tip off at 7 p.m. at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. Fans can catch the action live on Peacock, as both teams look to seize the moment in this crucial conference clash.
